I was looking for new speakers to replace my Logitech X-140 2.0 Speakers. They were alright, especially for the price, just not loud enough and too little bass. I'm an animator and motion designer, so having accurate sound at my workstation is important to me.
First I tried the very well-reviewed Cyber Acoustics 3 pc Subwoofer/Satellite System CA-3602. I was immediately disappointed as they only sounded good when turned all the way up and sound just awful without the subwoofer. Sent them back and ponied up an extra $45 for the AV30s. Learned about M-Audio at university where we had AV40s in a couple of the media arts labs. The AV30's definitely just seem to be their little brothers, incredible sound, just not quite as loud. As computer speakers, they're perfect. Zero distortion at max volume and just loud enough. I'm no audiophile, but I've owned a lot of stereos and tinkered with car audio for years and these speakers are just a joy to listen to.
Pros:
Awesome well-balanced sound, to my not-iophile ears
Volume, aux-in and headphone in front
Small for how good they sound
Grills over the speakers are a plus since I have a 3-year-old demolition specialist
Cables supplied
Very reasonably priced on sale.
Cons:
Yes the left speaker gets pretty warm in the back. Hoping that it doesn't suffer the short lifespan that many reviewers of the previous version reported.
Power off in the back. I actually prefer this to the power being tied to the volume, but it would be better if it was up front.
My tower is on the right of my desk and the left speaker has the input, so the supplied cable wasn't long enough.
Somewhat lacking in deep deep bass, but that's the price we pay for the simplicity of no subwoofer
Not engineered for visual beauty, they kinda look like crappy detachable boombox speakers.

The AV-30 Studiophile speakers I purchased are quite good and sound even better. The low register is very good as I have a low register voice. They help when editing audio files for my voice over work and give my work the rich, deep sound I was looking for. They stack up very well to the Bose Companion set I'd been looking at. They were $19 less and look better in my home studio.

If you're into rap or dance music these are the speakers for you. However, if you're into music with vocals stay clear. These speakers suffer from midrange suckout. The vocals sound muffled and over powered by the boomy base.
